Last month, the White House released its official international cyberspace policy. The Pentagon plans to release its official doctrine for the use of cyberweapons soon.
These developments, along with last summer’s discovery of the Stuxnet worm in Iran and the initiation of a military Cyber Command in the United States, have brought the concept of cyberwar
to its highest level of prominence ever
Yet despite worrying military thinkers for over 20 years, cyberwar remains a rarely practiced, poorly defined and widely misunderstood form of conflict.

Unlike conventional warfare, the ability to cause destruction with nothing more than 1′s and 0′s remains beyond the reach of most countries, and outside the interest of many more.
There are more countries that possess nuclear weapons than there are that have the robust offensive cyberwar capabilities needed to cause serious harm, even though cyberattacks require far less technical expertise and financial investment than atomic bombs.
Even among experts, the very definition of cyberwar varies widely.
Does it even exist?
Richard Clarke, the former special advisor to the president on cybersecurity, has broadly claimed that any attempt to penetrate a nation’s computer systems constitutes cyberwar.
But Howard Schmidt, the current cybersecurity czar, has gone as far as saying that cyberwar does not exist – since digital attacks fall short of any reasonable definition of war.
Most experts land somewhere in between, defining cyberwar as an attack that originates in cyberspace but causes real-world harm.
Under this definition, cybervandalism, such as bringing down a government website, and cyberespionage, such as hacking into a computer to steal state secrets, would not constitute cyberwar.
“Cyberwar has to meet the same threshold we’d hold any other war to,” said James Lewis, senior fellow and director of technology and public policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. “So if someone spray-painted a government building with graffiti, we wouldn’t call that an attack. And if someone is caught spying, that isn’t war.”
“There has to be physical destruction, and there have to be casualties,” Lewis added. “If there aren’t, it isn’t an attack, and it isn’t war.”
This disagreement over what does or does not constitute cyberwar stems in part from the ambiguous policies of the countries that practice it.
By keeping the line between cyberespionage and cyberwarfare somewhat fuzzy, countries preserve their ability to justify retaliation at the time of their choosing – while simultaneously avoiding any rigid commitments that could escalate a conflict into something more dangerous.
Currently, the U.S., Israel, the U.K., China and Russia are the only countries with proven offensive cyberattack capabilities. France, Germany, Iran and North Korea have smaller, but growing, programs, and another 30 or so countries, both rich and poor, have begun building these kinds of programs within their own military and intelligence organizations.
To overcome the natural robustness of targeted computer systems, effective cyberwar requires a lot of time, money and skilled professionals – and thus the backing of a state.
“Hacktivist” groups such as Lulzsec and Anonymous, or the wide variety of organized-crime groups that use malware to make money, do not have the ability to launch attacks that would even approach the threshold of cyberwar.
“A 14-year old hacker cannot do damage to a country. It takes extensive infrastructure to perform this,” said Sami Saydjari, chairman of Professionals for Cyber Defense, a group of security experts who describe the mission as “to advocate, advise and advance sound cyber defense policy for the United States of America.”
“But even a Third World country has the capabilities to do it,” Saydjari said. “A number of groups have done analysis or mock attacks, and we found it takes about three years and half a billion dollars to do strategic damage.”

Hottest debate: Terrorism
In the gray area between states and criminals falls the most hotly debated category: terrorist organizations.
Terrorists have the desire to launch attacks that would qualify as cyberwar, but currently lack the capability to do so. The question of whether they will ever develop that capability sharply divides the security community.
For cyberwar hawks, the fear that Al Qaeda or Hezbollah could eventually attack the U.S. or its allies through cyberspace forms the primary justification for increased spending on cyberdefense.
To the cyberwar doves, fear-mongering and unnecessary military expenditure loom as greater threats to critical online systems than do terrorist groups that have historically relied on low-tech weapons such as box cutters and homemade explosives.

Although this tale comes from south of the US border in Mexico, it is so fascinating that it is sure to peak the interests of all who read it. Sealed for 1,500 years, the cold hand of modern technology has finally shed light on the hidden secrets of a Mayan tomb originally discovered in 1999 among the ruins of the Mayan city of Palenque in the hills of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. It is believed to contain the remains of a Mayan leader who ruled between AD 431 and 550.

For the very first time in 1,500 years, the interior of the tomb as it looked so long ago when it was sealed off from the world has been revealed. A tiny remote controlled camera dropped 16 feet (5 meters) deep through a small hole at the top of the jungle-covered pyramid has made it possible to access the tomb’s interior. The camera captured images of blood-red frescoes and black Mayan figures adorning the walls of the ancient tomb and pottery as well as pieces of a funereal shroud made of jade and mother-of-pearl.
The tomb itself was too fragile to break into and the sarcophagus (stone coffin) was not visible. There were bones, however, lying on the stone floor amid chunks of crumbling walls. It is believed that this is the burial site of K’uk’ Bahlam I, who was the first ruler of the city-state.
This rare glimpse into an ancient civilization may help the modern world better understand the early Mayan rulers of whom little is known.

Jack Dorsey runs the company known as Square, and he also happens to be the co-founder of Twitter. He is hoping to take the world by storm again with a new phone application that eliminates the need for credit cards! Users on IPad, IPhone and Android can utilize the app by simply selecting whichever store they are in at the moment.
Purchases are a breeze as long as the store in question has a corresponding app installed. The cashier has only to select the customer’s name and the total purchase price is automatically charged to the customer’s credit card on file. In Apple and Google app stores, this application is currently free of charge.

The idea evolved from a product that had been developed by the same company some two years ago, which permitted cell phone users to connect a credit card scanner to the jacks on their headphones. Credit card companies have seen this idea for mobile wallets coming for some time now. In fact, this coming fall, Visa is slated to release its own mobile wallet platform. Later this week, mega giant, search engine Google, is expected to reveal its plans for developing its own line of mobile wallets
Although no one can say for sure who is going to win the mobile wallet war, it does seem that plastic credit cards are well on their way to that place where one can find hula hoops and bell-bottom pants.
Will these mobile wallets help to reduce the incidence of fraud and identity theft? Thieves always seem to find devious ways to get around new systems. Mobile wallets do seem to make purchases quicker, safer and easier, which could be a blessing during the holiday season. Not needing to carry a card can make it is more difficult to steal credit information.

Facebook is proud to announce that the social media giant now has integrated facial recognition in its online platform. This new system allows content to be match with faces for an easier way to tag photos. Although tagging is still done by your friends, the new facial recognition software detects the face and pushes it like an advertisement on the right hand side of your friends’ screen.
This new system allows for quick and efficient tagging for those moments where you wish you could tag but don’t feel like being stranded down to the computer all day. This feature was previously available to only North American consumers, but now is available for the rest of the world to utilize.
ZDNet explains how to update your settings for the new facial recognition software:
    1. Go into your facebook privacy settings. 2. Underneath the scatter-graph of boxes, click Customize settings. 3. Under Suggest photos of me to friends, click Edit settings. 4. Facebook automatically enables this feature. On the dialog box, select whether you want the feature to be enabled or not. Click Disable if you do not want it. 5. Press OK and it is automatically done.

Last winter, inventor John Kanzius was already attempting one seemingly impossible feat-building a machine to cure cancer with radio waves-when his device inadvertently succeeded in another: He made saltwater catch fire. TV footage of his bizarre discovery (check out the video below) has been burning up the blogosphere ever since, drawing crackpots and Ph.D.s alike into a raging debate. Can water burn? And if so, what good can come of it?
Some people gush over the invention’s potential for desalinization or cheap energy. Briny seawater, after all, sloshes over most of the planet’s surface, and harnessing its heat energy could power all sorts of things. Skeptics say Kanzius’s radio generator is sucking up far more energy than it’s creating, making it a carnival trick at best.

For now, Kanzius is tuning out the hubbub. The retired radio- and television- station owner says the saltwater stuff is interesting, but a cancer breakthrough is what he’s really after. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2002, he began building his radio-wave blaster the next year, soon after a relapse. His lifelong fascination with radio provided further inspiration. Radio station antennas, he knew, can turn a bystander’s metal eyeglasses toasty warm. If he could seed a person’s cancerous cells with nanoscopic metal particles and blast them with radio waves, perhaps he could kill off the cancer while sparing healthy tissue.
The saltwater phenomenon happened by accident when an assistant was bombarding a saline-filled test tube with radio waves and bumped the tube, causing a small flash. Curious, Kanzius struck a match. “The water lit like a propane flame,” he recalls.
“People said, ‘It’s a crock. Look for hidden electrodes in the water,’ ” says Penn State University materials scientist Rustum Roy, who visited the Erie, Pennsylvania, inventor in his lab in August after seeing the feat on Google Video. A demo made Roy a believer. “This is discovery science in the best tradition,” he says.
Roy thinks the sodium chloride in the water may weaken the bonds between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms, which are broken free by radio waves. It’s these gas molecules that are igniting, he explains, not the liquid itself. Tests show that the reaction disappears once the radio waves stop. Roy plans to conduct more tests to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Meanwhile, researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have made progress using Kanzius’s technology to fight cancer in animals. They published their findings last month in the journal Cancer.

How to Burn Saltwater as Fuel
Inventor John Kanzius managed to burn saltwater to generate power. Here’s how:
1. A generator emits 14-megahertz radio waves.
2 . The waves bombard a solution of regular table salt and water.
3. Exactly what happens next remains a mystery, but one theory posits that the sodium chloride may weaken the bonds between the strong>oxygen and hydrogen atoms in water. Radio waves break apart the bonds and liberate flammable hydrogen gas molecules.
4. A match ignites the hydrogen, generating an intense flame.
5. The resulting heat powers a simple engine.

Reaching speeds of more than 200 miles per hour, a Bentley convertible has broken the Guinness World Record as the fastest car on ice.
On Feb. 10, Finnish auto racer Juha Kankkunen drove an all-wheel-drive, 12-cylinder Bentley Continental Supersports convertible across a patch of frozen sea, topping out at 205.48 mph. This mark bests Kankkunen’s previous record forfastest car on ice, a 199.83 mph effort set in 2007 in a Bentley Continental GT.

For the event, a 10.25-mile-long track had been carved into the thick, frozen ice resting atop of the Baltic Sea near Oulu, Finland. To account for favorable winds, Kankkunen made two runs on the track, one in each direction, and a GWR judge determined the average speed.
To set the record, Kankkunen was required to keep the car under complete control while speeding on the slippery ice’s surface, with temperatures dipping to -22 Fahrenheit and potentially dangerous crosswinds blowing across the frozen sea. Good thing Kankkunen decided against driving with the top down.

Tobii will be showing off the world’s first laptop that can be controlled by the user’s eyes. The notebook will be seen for the first time in Hanover at CeBIT that kicked off today. The Tobii eye-control technology is inside a Lenovo notebook and is the result of collaboration between Lenovo and Tobii.

 The laptop is the first fully functional prototype of the Tobii eye control technology. The tech inside the notebook allows the user to point, scroll, and select things on the computer screen using their eyes. Typically, this sort of control would be done with a mount, track pad, or a touchscreen. Tobii and Lenovo claim that the eye control system is intuitive to use and natural to control.





This sounds like an excellent system for the disabled that can’t use their hands or have limited control of their hands. Tobii and Lenovo constructed a first batch of 20 laptops using the tech and each will get ten of the machines to use for testing and demonstration. According to Tobii with the tech on the notebooks all the user has to do is look at a widget to get more detail on it rather than clicking.

This pen has to be the most amazing pen ever. It looks like a gun with a bronze/gold color. To be more precise it is a steampunk pen that looks like the Swiss knife, and it has a lot of functions. It can be a flashlight, a pen of course, a flash drive, a spoon, a knife, a fork, a toothbrush, a nail clipper, etc. So if you are on the go, just grab the steampunk pen and you are ready to run to wherever you need to be at. The flash light is blue and it looks like a laser pen, but I guess it’s not dangerous as the blue light is weak. If you need to eat fast food for example you can always use the knife, the spoon or the fork to finish up your meal. And of course it has a watch, so you can see what time it is in any situation. I think it might be a bit clumsy writing with the pen because of all the stuff that is attached to it, but better to have a clumsy pen than no pen. Something that reminds me of this steampunk pen are these calculators from the past.

















Located in Qingdao City in East China’s Shandong province, the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge is the Longest Bridge in the World. It has a length of 164,800 meters (164.8 kilometers) and a span of 260 feet. The bridge was completed in 2010 after four years of construction and opened in 2011. The total cost of construction is around $8.5 billion dollars and has employed 10,000 workers. The bridge’s primary purpose is for railway traffic.


 
The Qingdao Haiwan Road Bridge, which is part of the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge, also hold the record as the longest bridge over water. This makes China as the country with the most longest bridge. In fact, three of the world’s longest bridges are from China: the Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge, Tianjin Grand Bridge at 113,700 kilometers and Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge at 79,732 kilometers.


















The Dalu Robot Restaurant, in Jinan, northern China’s Shandong Province, has a very special wait staff indeed. All of the waitresses (six in total) are robots that follow a fixed route that can serve up to 100 diners.
 











Developed by the Shandong Dalu Science and Technology Company, the 21 tables are set up in circles and diners are served in rotation. After serving the food, the robots prepare for the next round of customers by returning to the kitchen to refill their carts.












Humans prepare all of the food in the kitchen, which consists mostly of Chinese fondue. Other human staff welcome customers and explain how the restaurant works and what they can expect from their waitresses.
The developers of this idea are hoping to take the concept even further.
“Next, we’ll develop robots which can climb stairs and help with kitchen chores like washing the dishes. And our waitresses will become more sophisticated so they can go directly to a customer’s table and even refill drinks,” said restaurant spokesman, Zhang Yongpei

Now you need to Forget electrics and hybrids, the future of sustainable cars might just be in the wind. Two people recently set a number of of world records as they travelled across Australia in a wind-powered car.

The car, fittingly called the Wind Explorer, is powered by a combination of turbines and kites, that provide energy for a 8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The car itself weights just 441 pounds and is made of a lightweight carbon fiber. The cross-continent trip, which lasted 18 days and spanned over 3,000 miles, was both the first time a wind-powered car has crossed a continent and the longest trip ever for such a vehicle.
It wasn’t all easy though. The duo, which was consisted of an Australian TV personality and a German engineer, encountered several flat tires along the way and even blew two engines

The Central Japan Railway Company has announced that it plans to build the world’s fastest train. The train, to be completed in 2027, will travel between Tokyo and Nagoya on a 178 miles rail extension line, estimated to cost about $64 billion. The speedy train will run up to 310 miles per hour, cutting down the hour and half long journey by 40 minutes — the current line runs at about 167 miles per hour.
