Smoking increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, emphysema and infertility — and now, a new study says it could also increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Heavy smoking — at least two packs a day — in middle age increases the risk of later developing Alzheimer’s disease by 157 percent, and vascular dementia by 172 percent, according to the study. Vascular dementia is dementia caused by reduction or loss of blood supply to the brain. The findings add to previous work linking smoking and development of dementia. However, this study is different in that the researchers followed a large group of study participants over a long period of time — which was necessary for finding a link to an age-related disease like Alzheimer’s, said study researcher Rachel Whitmer, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in California.

“You need a study of a large group of people with several decades of follow-up, and enough smokers who make it to an age where they are at risk for dementia,” Whitmer told MyHealthNewsDaily.

Researchers still aren’t completely sure why smoking affects brain function. But smoking is known to cause inflammation and oxidative stress — cell damage from toxic free radicals in the body — conditions that are associated with the onset of Alzheimer’s, she said.

“If you are an elderly person who smokes, and you’re lucky enough to not have cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease or cancer, you’re still at a greater risk of dementia throughout late life,” Whitmer said.

The new study was published online today (Oct. 25) in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

Up in smoke

In the study, 21,123 California residents ages 50 to 60 participated in a health survey from 1978 to 1985, in which they indicated whether they had never never smoked, or were former or current smokers.
Researchers followed up with them about 23 years later, between 1994 and 2008, and found that 5,367 of the people, or 25.4 percent, had been diagnosed with dementia. Of those , 1,136 were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and 416 were diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Researchers found that people who smoked more than two packs of cigarettes a day had a higher risk of developing either type of dementia  than nonsmokers.
Former smokers, and people who smoked less than half of a pack a day, did not seem to have an increased risk of dementia than nonsmokers, the study said.

Conflicting evidence

Past studies have found a link between smoking and dementia. However, not all of them report the same relationship.
A 2003 study of 218 middle-aged Japanese-American men in the journal Neurobiology of Aging found the more cigarettes a man smoked, the greater his risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
But a 10-year study of 1,436 elderly Taiwanese people found past and current smokers were one-third less likely to be cognitively impaired than people who had never smoked. That finding, published in September in the journal Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, suggested smoking is a protective factor in cognitive function.
That seemingly protective effect may come from nicotine’s action as a stimulant, prompting smokers to perform better on cognitive tests, Whitmer said.
However, that effect  was not found in the new study, and was not found among long-term smokers with Alzheimer’s and dementia particularly, she said.

Being unemployed can be stressful, but the psychological toll of having a poorly paid, demanding job can be just as bad for mental health as having no job at all, a new study finds. In addition, becoming employed isn’t always a boon for mental health. Study participants who transitioned from being unemployed to being employed in a poor-quality job showed a worsening of their mental health, the researchers, from The Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, say. The findings suggest government policies shouldn’t focus solely on reducing unemployment. The conditions of those jobs, including benefits, hours and flexibility, should be considered as well, said Joseph Grzywacz, an associate professor of family and community medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., who was not involved with the study.

“The people who look at employment and unemployment tend to think that all jobs are created equal,”  Grzywacz told MyHealthNewsDaily. “This is further evidence suggesting that all jobs are not created equal.”

Employment and mental health
The researchers examined results from a nationally representative household survey of more than 7,000 people living in Australia. They looked at seven years’ worth of responses, beginning in 2001.
Job quality was graded based on four factors: stress and level of demand, amount of control employees said they had over their work, job security (or potential for a future) and whether or not the pay was fair.
Participants also filled out a mental health questionnaire that assessed symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as positive emotions, including feeling happy and calm.
Overall, those who were employed had better mental health than those who were unemployed.
But after taking into account factors that could influence the findings — such as an individual’s age, gender, marital status and level of education – the mental health of unemployed individuals was on par with, or better than, the mental health of those with poor-quality jobs.
Those with the poorest-quality jobs showed a greater drop in mental health over time compared with those who were unemployed.
People who became employed in a high-quality job saw their mental health score go up an average of 3 points. But if they took on a poor-quality job, their mental health declined by 5.6 points. The mental health of this group was worse than those who remained unemployed throughout the study period. A difference of just 4 or 5 points on this test is considered clinically relevant, meaning you can see changes in a person’s mental health, the researchers say.
The findings suggest that “employment strategies seeking to promote positive outcomes for unemployed individuals need to also take account of job design and workplace policy,” the researchers write online in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.


What can be done?
One way to improve job quality would be to put protections in place to promote job security, Grzywacz said. For instance, not having an employment contract creates a sense of insecurity because “people don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring,” he said. Employers could reduce the amount of independent contract work and bring back the notion that “if you toil for a company, you have a future with that company.”
Organizations could also try and reduce the number of “forced choices” employees are required to make, such as the choice between finishing something at work or taking care of a sick child, Grzywacz said. Employers could create flexible leave policies so that employers aren’t forced to choose between their job and their family, he said.
Finally, the idea jobs can be created by cutting full-time jobs in half might not be the best thing for employees. The benefits of these part-time jobs may not be enough for a family to survive, Grzywacz said.
“You may not be getting any additional gain from putting everybody back to work,” he added.
Pass it on: A job with poor conditions, including low pay and high stress, can be just as bad for mental health as no job at all.


An apple a day may do more than keep the doctor away — it can lower levels of bad cholesterol and improve levels of good cholesterol without causing weight gain in women, according to a new study.Women who ate 75 grams of dried apples every day for six months had a 23 percent decrease in bad LDL cholesterol, said study researcher Bahram H. Arjmandi, professor and chair of the department of nutrition at the Florida State University.Their levels of good HDL cholesterol, also increased by about 4 percent, according to the study.


To see the effects apples had on women’s health, Arjmandi and his colleagues randomly assigned 160 women ages 45 to 65 to one of two groups. One group ate 75 grams (roughly 2.64 ounces, or about a one-third of a cup) of dried apples every day for a year, and the other group ate another dried fruit for a year. Their blood samples were taken after three months, six months and then at the end of the study period.
At the end of the year-long period, the women who ate the apples had lower levels of bad cholesterol, lipid hydroperoxide (the product of toxic free radicals, which cause cell damage and death in the body) and C-reactive protein, an indicator of inflammation in the body, than when they started the study, researchers said.



Researchers also found that the extra 240 calories per day consumed from the dried apple did not lead to weight gain in the women — in fact, they lost an average of 3.3 pounds over the year, the study said.
Even though the people in the study ate dried apples, the effect would likely be the same if they ate fresh apples, too, said Keri Gans, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, who was not involved with the study.
Though it’s hard to make an exact comparison, one cup of fresh apples would be about equivalent to a quarter cup of dried apples, Gans said. Their cholesterol-lowering benefits likely come from their high fiber content, which past research has shown can lower bad cholesterol levels, she said.

The study was presented today (April 12) at the meeting Experimental Biology 2011. The study was funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.


Hormones that circulate in the blood could explain why older people have different sleep patterns than younger people, a new study suggests.

The body’s circadian clock is determined by the expression of the circadian genes in the body’s cells, and the time for sleeping and waking are indicated by peaks in expression of these genes, the study said. Older people tend to have an earlier peak expression over a 24-hour period than younger people, which explains why they tend to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier.

Scientists found they could manipulate the circadian clocks of skin cells from younger people to behave like those of older people, by growing those cells in the blood serum of older people, said study researcher Steven A. Brown, of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.This finding suggests some hormone or other circulating molecule in the blood of older people has the ability to influence the cells’ circadian clocks, he said.

“A gene that had a peak expression at a particular time in cells from younger individuals might have this peak two hours earlier in the presence of serum from older individuals,” Brown told MyHealthNewsDaily.
The study was published today (April 11) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.

Comparing circadian clocks:

Scientists grew skin cells from people in their 20s and people in their 60s in regular bovine serum cultures, and then in cultures made of blood serum from the 60-year-olds, according to the study.
They found that the cells from the 20-year-olds behaved like those of the 60-year-olds when they were grown in the blood serum.
“Human behavior shifts because activities normally done at one time of day” — like waking, eating or sleeping — “are now done earlier or late,” Brown said. “Cellular ‘behavior’ shifts in the same way: Something that the cell normally does at one time of day is done instead at another.”

Secrets of the skin cells:

Scientists have long known that skin cells have clocks that genetically mirror their owners, he said.
“I can say whether you are a ‘lark’ or an ‘owl’ simply by looking at your skin cells,” Brown said. But “what is new here is that blood serum from older individuals makes cells from younger people ‘behave’ as if they were old.”
Other factors also could account for the earlier sleep schedules of elderly people, he said.
For example, elderly people may be exposed to less sunlight or may spend less time outdoors than younger people, which could have an impact their circadian clocks. Or, it’s possible that the blood-circulating molecule is somehow tied with these factors to influence sleep and wake cycles, he added.







A mother’s stress during pregnancy and breast-feeding may prompt changes in her infant’s genes that increase the child’s risk of obesity later in life, according to a new study in mice. When mice in the study were put under stress – a low protein diet – during pregnancy, their offspring grew faster after weaning than did the offspring of non-stressed mice. After two months, the offspring of stressed mice developed belly fat and prediabetes, a condition characterized by abnormally high blood sugar levels. The researchers think the mother’s stress causes changes in the way neuropeptide Y, a brain neurotransmitter, behaves. Neuropeptide Y stimulates appetite and can induce the formation and growth of fat cells. Stress may cause modifications of the offspring’s genes that increase the activity of neuropeptide Y, and in turn, increase the number of fat cells in the body.

The number of fat cells a person has before they reach their teen years is a major determinant of his or her risk for obesity, said study researcher Ruijun Han, of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology. “So intervention during pregnancy and childhood might be an efficient way to prevent adult obesity,” Han said.
However, more work needs to be done to see if stress produces the same effects in humans. In addition, the findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The study will be presented this week at the Experimental Biology 2011 meeting in Washington, D.C.

While the mother mice in the study were only exposed to nutritional stress, people who experience malnutrition are also subjected to social stress, said study researcher Zofia Zukowska, professor of physiology at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.
“In humans, low protein diet or malnutrition is often associated with a very hard lifestyle,” Zukowska said. “So it’s a combination of nutritional and psychological stress,” she said.
Previous studies of people who experienced famine, such as survivors of the Dutch feminine during World War II, have found that children of malnourished pregnant women are at increased risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, Zukowska said.

The researchers plan to conduct future studies comparing the impact of psychological stress and nutritional stress during pregnancy, Zukowska said.

People who travel extensively for business are at a higher risk for a variety of health
Problems, including obesity and high cholesterol.
That’s the finding of two researchers at Columbia University who found that the more often a person travels for work, the less healthy they are likely to be.
The research was conducted by comparing the health data of more than 13,000 employees from a corporate wellness program. Close to 80 percent of the employees traveled at least one night per month. Nearly 1 percent were extensive travelers — spending as many as 20 nights a month on the road.

The researchers found that employees who did not travel at all were actually a less healthy group as compared to light travelers who travelled between one and six nights a month. Researchers think this may reflect the fact that those workers were already unhealthy and therefore, did not travel as much for work.
Otherwise, rates of “less-than-good” health increased along with nights of travel. Extensive travelers were 260 percent more likely to rate their health as either fair or poor, compared to light travelers.
Other health risk factors showed similar patterns: obesity was 33 percent more likely in nontravelers and 92 percent more likely for extensive travelers. The same two groups were also more likely to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

Although business travel is often equated with long airline flights, relatively short business trips in personal cars are much more common. Several factors could contribute to health risks in frequent business travelers — for example, poor sleep, fattening foods and long periods of inactivity, the researchers said.

The study’s authors, Catherine Richards and Andrew Rundle of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, suggest some steps that companies can take to help employees stay healthy while they’re on the road — for example, offering stress management classes, selecting hotels with gym facilities and making healthier food choices using meal reimbursements.
The research appears in the April Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

The ability to at least partially erase bad memories in people is a step closer to reality today with research into marine snails.
Scientists found they could erase long-term memories in the snails by inhibiting the activity of a specific protein kinase called PKM —molecules that chemically modify proteins.
“I think we will be able to alter memories someday to reduce the trauma from our brains,” said the study’s senior author, David Glanzman, a UCLA professor of integrative biology and physiology and of neurobiology.
The study appears in the April 27 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, a premier neuroscience journal.






The new research, dealing with actual neurons in the snails brains, could eventually help with treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, drug addiction and maybe Alzheimer’s disease and other long-term memory disorders, Glanzman and his colleagues say.
“Almost all the processes that are involved in memory in the snail also have been shown to be involved in memory in the brains of mammals,” Glanzman said.
When marine snails are attacked by a predator, their sensitivity to environmental stimuli goes up — a “fundamental form of learning that is necessary for survival and is very robust in the marine snail,” Glanzman explained.  The neurons associated with this behavior were targeted in the study.

“We found that if we inhibit PKM in the marine snail, we will erase the memory for long-term sensitization,” Glanzman said. “In addition, we can erase the long-term change at a single synapse that underlies long-term memory in the snail.”
